How to Change Your Car Battery Step by Step

The battery is your car's electrical heart. When it fails, usually on the coldest morning of the year, the car will not start. Changing it at home is straightforward, but there are critical steps most people miss: choosing the correct battery type, protecting the car's electronics, and getting the terminal connection order right. The job takes 20-40 minutes and saves 35-70 pounds over a garage visit.

When to Change the Battery: Warning Signs

A standard lead-acid car battery lasts 3-5 years. AGM and EFB batteries for Stop-Start cars can last 6-8 years but cost significantly more to replace.

Clear signs your battery is failing:

  • Slow or laboured cranking — the engine struggles to turn over, especially in cold weather
  • Battery warning light illuminated on the dashboard
  • Erratic electronics — flickering lights, radio resetting, sluggish central locking
  • Swollen case or white deposits on the terminals (sulphation)
  • Failed load test — below 70% of rated capacity
  • Over 4-5 years old — replace preventively even if still starting
Many auto parts retailers like Halfords and Euro Car Parts offer free battery testing. Do this before buying a new one to confirm the alternator is not the real culprit.

How to Choose the Right Battery

Fitting an incompatible battery can damage the car's electronics. Always check the owner's manual or original battery label. Key parameters:

  • Voltage: 12V for all conventional cars
  • Capacity (Ah): Most common is 60-72 Ah. Never fit lower capacity than original
  • Cold Cranking Amps (CCA): Match or exceed the original figure
  • Technology: Conventional flooded lead-acid for non Stop-Start cars at 35-70 pounds; EFB for basic Stop-Start at 55-110 pounds; AGM mandatory for intensive Stop-Start or brake energy recovery at 90-180 pounds. NEVER replace AGM with conventional
  • Physical size BCI or EN group: must match the original
If your car originally came with an AGM battery, always fit AGM. A conventional battery in a Stop-Start car can damage the battery management ECU and generate expensive faults.

Tools and Materials Needed

Prepare everything before starting:

  • New battery with correct specifications
  • 10 mm spanner or socket — for terminals on most European cars; some use 8, 12 or 13 mm
  • Socket for hold-down bracket — usually 10 or 13 mm
  • Thick nitrile gloves — battery acid burns skin
  • Safety goggles — hydrogen gas emitted by the battery can ignite with a spark
  • Terminal cleaner spray or bicarbonate of soda solution — to remove sulphation
  • Petroleum jelly or lithium grease — to prevent future corrosion on terminals
  • Rags or paper towels
  • Optional but very useful: OBD memory keeper — maintains circuit voltage during the swap so you do not lose radio codes, window calibrations and seat memory positions

Preparation Before the Change

Before touching anything:

  1. Park in a ventilated, flat and safe location. Never in a closed garage — batteries emit flammable hydrogen gas
  2. Switch off the engine completely and remove the key
  3. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the alternator to discharge residual voltage
  4. Open the bonnet and locate the battery. Most cars: engine bay. Some models like BMW 5 and 7 Series, Mercedes E and S-Class, Porsche Cayenne: boot or under rear seat
  5. If you have an OBD memory keeper, connect it now to the OBD port under the steering column
  6. Note down radio presets, seat memory positions and climate control codes if you have no memory keeper
If you lose the radio code, check the owner's manual, the code card in the document wallet, or contact the dealer with your VIN number.

Disconnecting and Removing the Old Battery

The order is critical — a mistake here causes a short circuit:

  1. Identify terminals: negative (-) is the black cable; positive (+) is the red cable or red cover
  2. Loosen and remove the NEGATIVE (-) terminal FIRST. Turn anticlockwise. Pull clear and wrap in a rag to prevent accidental contact
  3. Loosen and remove the positive (+) terminal. If the spanner touches the bodywork while contacting the positive, it will short circuit
  4. Remove the hold-down bracket or clamp
  5. Lift the battery with both hands. Weight: 12-22 kg — bend your knees. Keep upright to avoid acid spillage
  6. Place on a flat surface, away from sparks and heat
NEVER bridge the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals with a metal tool. This will produce an intense arc, can melt the spanner, blow fuses and damage the ECU.

Cleaning Terminals and Battery Tray

Before fitting the new battery, clean everything for good conductivity:

  1. Inspect battery cables — if insulation is cracked or terminal heavily corroded, replace the cable
  2. Clean cable terminals with a brass wire brush. For heavy sulphation with white-blue powder, apply bicarbonate of soda solution 1 tablespoon in 250 ml water, leave 2 minutes, wipe with damp cloth, dry thoroughly
  3. Clean the battery tray with the same method
  4. Check the hold-down bracket is in good condition — a vibrating battery discharges faster and damages its internal plates
Apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly or lithium grease on clean terminals before connecting the new battery. Prevents corrosion for years.

Installing the New Battery and Final Checks

Connection order is the reverse of disconnection:

  1. Place the new battery in the tray in the same orientation as the original — reversed, and the cables will not reach
  2. Secure the hold-down bracket firmly — the battery must not move at all
  3. Connect the POSITIVE (+) terminal FIRST. Fit the red cable terminal, tighten firmly without overtightening
  4. Connect the NEGATIVE (-) terminal SECOND. Fit black terminal, tighten
  5. Apply petroleum jelly over connected terminals
  6. Start the engine — it should fire immediately and strongly. If it still cranks slowly, the alternator may be failing
  7. Check for warning lights on the dashboard. Reset the clock and radio presets as needed
On BMW Series 1, 3, 5 and 7 from 2002, Mercedes-Benz C, E and S-Class from 2004, Audi and Volvo models, the new battery must be coded via software such as ISTA or XENTRY or a compatible OBD tool like Launch or Autel. Without this, the charging system will not adapt and may damage the battery prematurely.
