Brakes are the most important safety system in your car. Changing brake pads is a task that requires precision but can be done in your garage with the right tools.

Safety Measures

Before starting, make sure the car is parked on a flat surface, with the handbrake engaged and wheels blocked. Never work under a car held only by a hydraulic jack.

Tools Needed

You will need: new brake pad set, new discs (if changing them), a ratchet wrench with sockets, a brake piston or large pliers, gloves, goggles, and a container to collect brake fluid.

Changing the Brake Pads

Remove the wheel. Locate the brake caliper and remove the guide bolts. Lift the caliper without disconnecting the hose. Remove the old pads. Push the piston inward with pliers or a brake piston tool. Install the new pads and reassemble the caliper.
