The sixth-generation Toyota RAV4 is now on sale in major markets with an exclusively electrified lineup. In Spain it starts at €43,500 (HEV) and €46,500 (PHEV) with deliveries since June 2026; in the United States it starts at $31,900, and it has just landed in Australia with around 10,000 pre-orders.

Previous generation
The fifth generation was offered with a 218-222 hp hybrid and a 306 hp PHEV with around 75 km of WLTP electric range. The new generation drops pure petrol, increases battery capacity by 30% and adds a front-wheel-drive PHEV for the first time.
What changes from the previous model
- Goodbye to pure petrol: The entire 2026 range is hybrid (HEV) or plug-in hybrid (PHEV); the conventional combustion version disappears.
- More capable PHEV: The battery grows to 22.7 kWh (+30%) and electric range reaches 137 km, with 50 kW DC fast charging.
- New 4x2 PHEV: For the first time the plug-in is offered with front-wheel drive and 268 hp, a more accessible option than the 304 hp AWD-i.
- New trims: The GR Sport, with a sporty focus, and the Woodland, with an off-road flavour in the US market, join the range.
The RAV4 gets a full redesign
Toyota has put the sixth-generation RAV4 (code XA70), the world's best-selling SUV, on sale with a fundamental change: the conventional petrol version is gone and the entire range is built around two electrified systems, the self-charging hybrid (HEV) and the plug-in hybrid (PHEV).
After orders opened in January, first deliveries in Spain began in June 2026. The model is also on sale in the United States and has just arrived in Australia, where it had accumulated around 10,000 reservations before landing.
Two powertrains, zero pure petrol
The RAV4 Hybrid pairs a 2.5-litre petrol engine with Toyota's hybrid system for 183 hp, with homologated consumption of 4.9 to 5.2 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 112 to 117 g/km. In Spain it is offered only with front-wheel drive in Advance and Spirit trims.
The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid debuts a redesigned plug-in system on the same 2.5. For the first time it is offered with front-wheel drive (4x2) and 268 hp, alongside the familiar intelligent all-wheel drive AWD-i (4x4) with 304 hp, which accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds and can tow up to 2,000 kg.
The PHEV that goes furthest on electric power
The big technical novelty is the 22.7 kWh lithium-ion battery, 30% larger than the previous generation's, which allows up to 137 km of electric range on the WLTP cycle, one of the highest figures among plug-in hybrids on the market.
The new RAV4 PHEV also supports 50 kW DC fast charging, unusual for a plug-in hybrid, in addition to an 11 kW on-board AC charger. Homologated consumption starts at 1.4 to 1.7 l/100 km with CO2 emissions of 32 to 40 g/km.
GR Sport and Woodland expand the range
The Spanish range is structured in Advance and Spirit trims for the HEV, and Advance, Spirit, Limited and GR Sport for the PHEV, the latter two exclusively with AWD-i. The GR Sport adds lowered suspension, 20-inch wheels and a specific aerodynamic kit.
In the United States the offer expands with the Woodland trim, aimed at outdoor use: higher ground clearance (8.5 inches), all-terrain tyres, tow hitch and a specific roof rack. There the PHEV is sold in SE, Woodland, XSE and GR Sport trims.
Pricing and availability by market
In Spain, the RAV4 Hybrid starts at €43,500 and the Plug-in Hybrid at €46,500, with orders open since 20 January 2026 and first deliveries in June. In the United States, the hybrid range starts at $31,900 (LE) and the PHEV at $41,500 (SE), about $2,365 less than the outgoing model despite gaining power and range.
In Australia, where the RAV4 PHEV is offered for the first time, the hybrid range starts at AU$45,990 and the plug-in at AU$58,840, with the GR Sport AWD topping the range at AU$66,340. Toyota acknowledges demand could outstrip supply into 2027.
New technology
The new-generation PHEV system pairs the 2.5-litre petrol engine with a 22.7 kWh lithium-ion battery: 30% more capacity and 8% more electric power delivery than the previous generation.
The 50 kW DC fast charging, unusual in a PHEV, allows recovering electric range during short stops; on AC the on-board charger accepts 11 kW.
The AWD-i all-wheel drive uses an independent electric motor on the rear axle, with no mechanical connection between axles, and allows a homologated towing capacity of 2,000 kg.
Market context
The RAV4 is the world's best-selling SUV and Toyota's most important product in the United States, with 479,288 units delivered in 2025. The bet on an exclusively electrified range responds to demand: in Australia it accumulated around 10,000 orders before arriving, and the brand expects demand to outstrip supply into 2027.
