BYD Dolphin

The BYD Dolphin represents the Chinese electric offensive in the European compact segment. At 4.29 metres long, it sits at the boundary between a B-SUV and a C-segment hatchback, with surprising roominess thanks to its 2.70-metre wheelbase. The 60.48 kWh Blade Battery uses LFP chemistry, developed and manufactured by BYD, which stands out for its safety: it passed the nail penetration test without fire or explosion. On the road, the 204 HP and 310 Nm from the front electric motor deliver 0-100 km/h in 7.0 seconds. Top speed is limited to 160 km/h, prioritising efficiency. The WLTP consumption is 15.9 kWh/100km. The 88 kW DC charging allows 10% to 80% recovery in about 34 minutes. The interior is highlighted by the 12.8-inch rotating central touchscreen, unique in the segment. The 345-litre boot is adequate, expandable to 1,310 litres. The standard heat pump improves winter range, and the V2L function powers external devices. Overall, the BYD Dolphin offers a value-for-money ratio hard to match by European manufacturers.
